With the potential to seat 5000 spectators, plus 400 in corporate boxes and parking for 650 vehicles, this single-span building is the largest facility of its kind in the lower North Island.
The international standard Agriculture and Equestrian Centre has a total ground-floor area of 6855m² which includes reception, ticketing and offices along with 545m² of mezzanine entertaining areas and viewing balconies.
Amongst other materials the structure required 1,700m³ of concrete, 25,000m³ of fill, 280 tonnes of structural steel and 22,000 watts of power in the main arena. The competition area, a purpose-designed surface for show-jumping and other equestrian events is comprised of 1500m³ of a special mix developed by Higgins.
This was a design and build project with tight construction deadlines. The first concrete was poured on February 9 and the stadium was completed on September 28.
